Weaving can generate 15 million kip per year for families

Weaving is one of the Nam Ngiep 1 Hydropower Project’s activities that aim to improve the people’s living conditions and at the same time can generate more than approximately USD 1,600 for some families.

Mrs. Phaivanh is one of 11 participants from Thahua Village, Bolikhan District, Bolikhamxay province, Laos who participates in the activity.

She said our village is located at the downstream of the Project and it is not directly affected by the Project.  Nevertheless, the Project has supported us in providing weaving tools and materials.  They also provided us with training on how to improve our technical knowledge in weaving and embroidery, and help find market for our products.  Buyers come from Vientiane Capital to our village to buy our products.

Mrs. Phaivanh said weaving is a long-term tradition of Laos.  Not only does it provide a means for generating additional income for the weavers, but it also maintains and passes a living legacy of previous generations to the next.

She said her 11-year old daughter has developed her passion in weaving since her early childhood and she can produce one piece of cloths to make skirt within one or two days.
